Polyurethane Processing Check List


Processing polyurethane compounds are easily achieved following a few basic precautions. From the safety stand-point, the major issues are: preventing skin contact and not breathing the fumes while using the compounds. From the processing standpoint, it is important to keep moisture from contaminating the resin or hardener and strictly observing the recommended processing and mould temperatures. Vacuum is highly recommended to remove any air introduced during mixing. Accurate scales must be used to achieve the correct mix ratio and steel utensils and containers are recommended.

The following represents the basic minimum steps to process urethane products. It may be used as quick reference. It is highly recommended that the persons using polyurethane products consult the Manufacturer's Safety Data Sheets before engaging in production.

The following instructions are very basic and, if there is any doubt, the user should contact the manufacturer of the urethane compound for detailed instructions before proceeding with full confidence.

Receiving Polyurethane Products.
  1. Check containers for proper labels.
  1. Accept without inspection

  1. Check for correct product number and container weight.
 
     
Storing Polyurethanes
  1. Protect against excessive heat.
  1. Expose to moisture.
 
  1. Protect against moisture exposure.
  1. Expose to heat.
Degassing (air removal)
  1. Degas Part A and Part B separately.
  1. Try and get by without degassing.
 
  1. Degas after mixing Part A and Part B together.
  1. Over degas Part A.
 
  1. Control degassing pressure to:

 
          <5mm for Part B  
          <20mm for Part A

Resin/Curative Transfer
  1. Use closed system and vacuum transfer if possible.
  1. Pressurize drums or containers.
 
  1. Provide local ventilation to remove fumes.
  1. Breathe fumes from isocyanates.
 
  1. Blanket containers with dry gas such as Nitrogen.
  1. Leave containers open to the air or moisture.
 
  1. Use gloves and do not get on hands.
  1. Use bare hands.
 
  1. Use respirator.
  1. Breathe fumes in ambient air.
 
  1. Observe manufacturers safety data (MSDS)
 
     
Metering Polyurethane Products.
  1. Check calculations
  1. Weigh without calculating.
 
  1. Use metal containers for checking material.
  1. Approximate.
 
  1. Use an electronic weigh scale.
  1. Use paper cups.
 
  1. Always record the weight of Part A and Part B used in the mix.

Mixing the urethane components
  1. Check material temperatures before starting.
 
 
  1. Mix quickly and thoroughly minimizing air entrapment.
  1. Beat air into the mix while mixing.

 

 
  1. Scrape the sides and bottom of mixing container.
  1. Use wooden sticks to mix with.

 

 
  1. Do not breathe fumes. Provide local ventilation to remove fumes.
  1. Breathe fumes.
 
  1. Wear safety glasses
 
 
  1. Clean tools in solvent after use.

Pouring and Casting with Urethanes.
  1. Check Tool Temperature
  1. Use incorrect tool temperature.
 
  1. Pour evenly and avoid splashing.
  1. Dump into the mould to minimize time.
 
  1. Pour from one area and let the material flow out pushing air ahead of it.
  1. Pour from various locations or all over the place.
 
  1. Allow material to set according to the manufacturers recommendation.
  1. Move moulds too quickly.
     
Curing and Post curing Urethanes.
  1. Follow the de-mould temperature and time.
  1. Run tooling too hot or too cold.
 
  1. Check for uniform firmness before removing the part.
  1. Use excessively high temperature.
