Why Epoxy Bushings Beat Porcelain

When it comes to bushings for hydro use in transformers and breakers, more and more engineers and transformer manufacturers are specifying epoxy over porcelain. They find these bushings stronger, lighter, more durable and more flexible. And because epoxy bushings don’t require special assembly, they are far less likely to malfunction and leak, causing destructive flashovers draining the transformer, which leads to delays, penalty clauses that are very costly.


No Assembly Required

With porcelain electrical transformer bushings, purchasing managers have to order parts from five vendors or more to create a whole one. This requires transformer manufacturers to incur inventory costs and labour costs to assemble the bushings.

Typically, it takes about 16 parts and at least one to two hours of labour to assemble a porcelain bushing, which also needs to be glued and left overnight to dry.

Besides the additional costs, the assembly process may mean the porcelain bushings are more prone to defects, which can cause them to fail in their jobs of insulating the conductors that carry the high-voltage current through grounded enclosures. And if the bushing cracks or fails, the transformer manufacturer is left responsible to replace it, incurring more time and labour costs.

By contrast, an epoxy bushing requires no assembly and can be cast in nearly any required geometry and design. Not only does this save assembly time and storage costs, it makes for a safer, more reliable and flexible product.

Epoxy resin insulators also resist high-power arcs and have a greater dry arcing distance than porcelain insulators, because they have free ends instead of metal caps.


Epoxy bushings also have:

  • A low partial discharge
  • A thermal coefficient of expansion 1/20th that of porcelain
  • Compression strength four to six times greater than glazed porcelain
  • Flexural strength of cycloaliphatic that is up to 15 times greater.

On face value, porcelain bushings cost less than epoxy bushings. But when you factor in the time and costs to assemble porcelain bushings, and the expensive prospect of product failure, then the cost difference disappears.
